Oct2022.Talking With Children About Difficult Issues

Thursday, November 10, 2022 @ 2:00 - 3:30 PM ET

Open and honest conversations help build strong, trusting partnerships among children, families, and providers. Sometimes, however, we encounter difficult or uncomfortable topics in conversations in our work. A child may start a conversation about something that has happened at home that takes you by surprise. Or, you may see and hear children exploring a sensitive topic in their play, such as family conflict or grief. While it is natural to experience a range of emotions when difficult topics come up, strategies exist that can help us feel more skilled in our response. This workshop gives early childhood professionals an opportunity to share their challenges when discussing sensitive issues, explore strategies for supporting children and families from different backgrounds, and look at ways to take care of themselves during these conversations.

This webinar is a part of the Promoting Mental Health and Family Well-Being in Today’s World Workshop Series.

Social-emotional wellness is essential for young children, their families, and the providers who work with them. Yet, promoting wellness and responding to the mental-health needs of children and families may be challenging, especially during the ongoing pandemic. The Family Connections Workshop Series provides scaffolding to support mental health. The series includes six workshops—three for early childhood program staff and three for parents—that are adapted from the original Family Connections training materials developed by Boston Children’s Hospital. Family Connections is an evidence-based, system-wide model for mental health consultation and professional development.

In this webinar series, you will learn knowledge and skills to strengthen relationships with adults and children and promote family well-being. You will explore how each workshop’s learning activities are carried out with staff and consider adaptations for delivery to parents.

You can register for each webinar individually or sign up for the whole series.
